Key Stage 1
Key Stage 1 welcomes children from early years into a more formal environment for learning. Our key aim is for each child to continue on their journey of empowerment through maintaining the fun, active approach to learning.
Our timetable in Key Stage 1 is designed to ensure that all children receive appropriate time for each subject. Students in Year 1 will receive a daily session for phonics and an opportunity to read one to one with an adult. Phonics is continued on a weekly basis for those students who require more support in year 2, with a view to progress toward the spelling objectives provided by the Cambridge Curriculum.
The majority of learning takes place in the nurturing environment of the classroom facilitated by qualified teachers either from the UK or having taught the UK National Curriculum internationally.
Subjects taught in Key Stage 1
English is taught five times a week, with dedicated time for spelling, grammar, handwriting, and reading. We follow ‘The Write Stuff’ approach to teaching English, which focuses on developing vocabulary and using high-quality, age-appropriate texts as models. This approach helps students become confident writers, fluent readers, and effective communicators, giving them a strong foundation for success across all areas of learning.
Students in Key Stage 1 will receive daily Maths lessons where we aim to provide practical opportunities for the students to demonstrate their learning. Our Maths sessions are supported by the White Rose Maths resources which develops reasoning and problem solving.
In Key Stage 1, students receive four Science lessons per week, providing even greater opportunities to explore and understand the world around them. Our lessons encourage curiosity and confidence through practical, hands-on experiences that make learning both meaningful and enjoyable.
Science at this stage is not only about discovery but also about building essential life skills. From developing problem-solving and critical thinking to fostering an early understanding of how things work in everyday life, these lessons lay the foundation for lifelong learning and a deeper appreciation of the world.
History and Geography of Malaysia are introduced in KS1 as part of a termly topic and we aim to make cross curricular links when necessary in order to widen the depth and breadth of the students’ knowledge and understanding.
PSHE is taught once a week in Key Stage 1. This is an opportunity for the students to learn about how to stay safe and healthy. We aim to encourage the students to express how they feel about certain matters and prepare them for challenges they may face in the future.
Students have PE once a week where they build fitness, teamwork, and a love of being active. The programme introduces a variety of sports and physical activities, helping children develop coordination, balance, and core skills while discovering the joy of movement.
Each class also takes part in swimming for one term during the year, giving students the opportunity to build water confidence and learn essential swimming skills. PE is about more than sport, as it teaches resilience, discipline, and cooperation, values that extend well beyond the playing field. By encouraging healthy habits and a positive approach to physical activity, we aim to give every child the foundation for lifelong well being.
