Key Stage 2
Building on the foundation laid in Key Stage 1 (KS1), this stage is the longest of all Key Stages and the children make significant progress academically, personally and socially in this Key Stage. We encourage our students to become increasingly more independent, self-confident & responsible. Our aim is to ensure that each student is stretched, challenged & supported across all subject areas.
Like KS1, qualified teachers either from the UK or having taught the UK National Curriculum internationally deliver the core subjects of English, Maths & Science as well as the subjects from the UK National Curriculum. Specialist teachers support the curriculum with the teaching of Performing Arts, Physical Education, Art, Mandarin, Bahasa Malaysia and Agama (for Muslim students). In Year 6, children sit for their first formal, externally assessed examination when they take the Cambridge Primary Checkpoint in English, Maths & Science.
Subjects taught in Key Stage 2
English is taught 5 times a week with dedicated time for spelling, handwriting and reading. We follow ‘The Write Stuff’ approach to teaching English which focuses on the development of vocabulary and the use of high quality, age appropriate example texts. Grammatical features and sentence construction is embedded within each unit of learning and progresses throughout the year groups. Students are exposed to a range of fiction and non – fiction texts and taught, through ‘The Write Stuff’ approach, how to apply the features to each genre of writing. We have a dedicated time for students to develop their undertanding of new vocabulary, make inferences and interpret a range of high quality text.
Each week, our pupils participate in five maths lessons where they are taught the key objectives linked to their year group. We aim for most children to achieve mastery of the objectives in their year group by teaching them the skills and then providing opportunities to use and apply their learning in different ways so that the learning becomes embedded. Practical, hands on equipment is used to support the children in understanding key concepts and a series of progressive challenges helps them build and deepen their understanding.
Students receive four Science lessons per week, providing even greater opportunities to explore and understand the world around them. Our lessons encourage curiosity and confidence through practical, hands-on experiences that make learning both meaningful and enjoyable.
Science at this stage is not only about discovery but also about building essential life skills. From developing problem-solving and critical thinking to fostering an early understanding of how things work in everyday life, these lessons lay the foundation for lifelong learning and a deeper appreciation of the world.
History and Geography is taught through a range of Topic themes. Students in Key Stage 2 will cover 3 ‘Topics’ throughout the academic year. We aim to provide the students with an understanding of internationally significant events and individuals from a variety of time periods. Our Topic sessions are carefully planned to enable the students to investigate and compare their own and other cultures and explore the challenges facing the world in which they are growing up.
In Primary, students have PE once a week where they build fitness, teamwork, and a love of being active. The programme introduces a variety of sports and physical activities, helping children develop coordination, balance, and core skills while discovering the joy of movement.
Each class also takes part in swimming for one term during the year, giving students the opportunity to build water confidence and learn essential swimming skills. PE is about more than sport, as it teaches resilience, discipline, and cooperation, values that extend well beyond the playing field. By encouraging healthy habits and a positive approach to physical activity, we aim to give every child the foundation for lifelong well being.
